Annual Portfolio Review
Once a year, step back and assess the full picture. This review keeps your portfolio aligned with your goals as your life and the markets evolve.
Checklist
- Calculate total portfolio return for the year and compare to a relevant benchmark
- Check whether your asset allocation has drifted from your target and rebalance if needed
- Review all fees paid (brokerage commissions, fund expense ratios, exchange fees)
- Assess progress toward each investment goal (retirement, home, education, etc.)
- Identify positions with unrealized losses and evaluate tax-loss harvesting opportunities
- Revisit your risk tolerance — has your income, family situation, or health changed?
- Confirm your emergency fund still covers 3–6 months of current expenses
- Set your contribution plan for the coming year (monthly amount, asset allocation)
- Document the key lessons and mistakes from this year's investing activity
